Relaxing at my In-laws
Every year on the 4th of July, Craig and I join his parents at their beach house on the Washington coast. I like the small town festivities surrounding the holiday and I enjoy the company of my in-laws. It is a relaxing few days where I don’t let things like dogs urinating on my cup get to me, I get to run on the beach, and I’m reminded of the simple things in life; like buttering corn.
With our family of 5 and my in-laws, their 3 bedroom and 1 bathroom vacation home is tiny, but comfortable. Having been on the other side of the in-law lottery, I consider myself lucky to have in-laws that I choose to spend time with in close quarters.
Always Loved Craig’s Family
I immediately loved Craig’s family and I think they liked me too. When we met, it had been a while since he had introduced a woman to his parents. Read: slut. Him, not me. We were dating a few months before he invited me to his parents home for dinner.
It was a traditional Sunday dinner of fried chicken, mashed potatoes, corn on the cob, and buttered bread. Craig’s mom is an excellent cook. I was seated next to Craig’s dad who handed me a slice of buttered bread.
No one Makes Buttered Corn Like my Mother-in-Law
The food looked good, but I was in my late 20’s and not married, so I still cared about my weight. I took small portions of food and reluctantly accepted a piece of the heavily buttered bread offered by Craig’s dad. I took a bite, but there was so much butter that it was definitely not worth the fat and calories. My plan was to take another bite while someone was watching so I would get credit, then I would try to hide it under a chicken bone.
A few minutes later, someone asked for the cornbread. I kind of perked up because cornbread sounded infinitely better than the limp saturated bread sitting on my plate. As I scanned the dining table for the cornbread, all eyes turned to me and then my plate.
It appears I had absconded with the Corn Bread. Those freaks butter their CORN with a piece of bread spread with butter. Who knew there was a trick to buttering corn?
