A few weeks ago I was invited to try a new vegan restaurant in Portland, The Veggie Grill. I am not a huge meat fan per se, but I am not vegan, lacto-ovo or even a plain ol’ vegetarian. I do, however, love most vegetables. Except beets, they’re gross. I have also been trying to lose a few lbs so this restaurant sounded great.
When I looked up the menu online, I was a little skeptical. There were a lot of dishes with substitute proteins – I haven’t been a tofurky fan since that brief stage in college which happened to coincide with not shaving my pits for 6 months. I may love my veggies, but I like my chicken spelled with an e and without added gratuitous punctuation.
The Veggie Grill has several items on the menu with their version of chickin’. I honestly didn’t think I would like these items. But then I tried the Buffalo Wings made with the crispy chickin’. They were really good. Like Jessica Simpson with the cameras rolling, I was completely befuddled. Given the vegan title, they couldn’t be buffalo or chicken – just where the heck does chickin’ come from?

The fun part about visiting The Veggie Grill as a guest is we got to taste almost every item on the menu. While not exactly a light and healthy way to visit the Veggie Grill, I didn’t mind a bit. The menu items included sandwiches, burgers, entrees, and huge salads.
The salads were probably my favorite. All of them had quinoa mixed with the greens. What a great way to add additional protein to a salad. I am going to bring this idea back to my own kitchen. If you try The Veggie Grill, I recommend the All-Hail Kail or Baja Fiesta.
It is a quick serve style restaurant with a bright and clean atmosphere. It is also kid friendly and even my picky eaters would devour the Chill Out Wings, Uptown Nachos, or Sweetheart Fries. They even serve beer and wine (bonus!).
Usually I defer to Craig when picking restaurants, but the next time Craig and I are downtown PDX and hungry, I’m insisting on The Veggie Grill. But I’m not going to mention the chickin’ and see if he notices.
