#Runstreak 2012 is 7% complete. The first week has been great and I am still highly motivated. I am pleased so many people are participating in #Runstreak or their own version of moving more.
I still think of myself as a runner. Though, if I were honest with myself, I know my mileage and commitment hover around has been status. Ya, I used to run an 8:30 minute mile without really trying. Now, I’m huffing and puffing to keep up at 10:30. I hate it. For me, this #Runstreak is more about establishing a pattern rather than going balls out every day. I’m hoping my pace will follow.
At the beginning of the week, I paid no attention to pace or time. I put my shoes on and I ran. I ran about 30 minutes each day for the first 5 days at a very easy pace.
On Friday, I ran a 6 mile hilly course with a group of fabulous running friends who I had been kind of avoiding because my running had hit the skids. I struggled to keep pace and felt like I was in slow motion up a few big hills. After, I felt as wiped out as if I had completed a 20 mile long run.
I took a nap after a 6 mile run. I actually felt a little tight after. Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Still, I’m motivated.
Day 7 I did the minimum, 1 mile. I want to push myself, but I don’t want to get injured by doing too much too soon.
Tell me what you did this week and how is your motivation level?

Well, this week I thought of you more than once doing this runstreak thing, and then I went out and bought running shoes. I walked around in them a bit and found them quite comfortable for shopping. So, much more motivated than I would have thought, is the verdict. Maybe in a couple of weeks I’ll manage to take a lope around the block. (also, yay for doing 6 miles uphill!! See, am keeping up the cheerleading!)
Thanks for the encouragement. And shopping IS exercise if you do it right!
Well this week I emptied my stomach contents not once but a bazillion times and in doing so I ran back and forth to the bathroom…
Does that count?
Can you vlog that shit next time?
I missed #Runstreak. Running back to figure it out.
I’ve never been fast, but I used to be consistent, and that’s my goal for this year. My results so far are middling
I used to be very consistent too! I’m hoping just committing to run every day for a mile will get me back there. Of course, once I’m dressed and out the door there is no way I’m just going a mile. I’m hopeful.
I did two miles every day but one (dog had a cut), and that was 1.5. I don’t run the whole time. I walk half a mile, rune half a mile and then go back and forth for the remaining mile. I took Saturday off. Call me lazy or call me having one day a week with my husband and I wanted to be pretty the whole time. I still think it was a success. I plan to go again today through Friday – and mabe even next Saturday. Takes me about 28 minutes to do the 2 miles. I’m good with that!!
That is success. And ya, I hate the sweat factor too. I’m hoping I can hit it early most days.
It’s hard to get back on the wagon. I did a 5 mile walk, a few shorter walks, and started back on my weightlifting program. I also jogged in high heel boots to get kaylin to a birthday party on time (ok, it was really more so that I wouldn’t be late to get martinis with friends while she was at the party). I am mom of the year! This first week back on the wagon sucks- my legs and ass are freaking sore!
Jogging in heels is like extra credit or something.
Great job this week! I can’t run much anymore because it aggravates an old knee injury. Sounds like you’re doing a good job of listening to your body while still pushing yourself! Keep it up!
Thanks! I am always worried about getting injured. I want to run when I’m old. Ok, older.
I suspect I will be in the “mighty have fallen” category with you when I actually get to it.
Currently getting up the stairs with laundry is a challenge.
Towards the end of Christmas break, I was feeling the same way. I was so lazy I made the kids do all the running up and down.
A new pair of sneakers always helps boost my exercise mojo.
7% down… you’re on your way!
They were so long overdue too. Next week I think I’ll treat myself to a pedi if I make it.
Isn’t the body amazing?
I got my butt so kicked in a group training class on Tuesday, it took until Friday to be able to stand up and sit down like a normal person!
Sounds like me after Cross-fit. I take it you never went back to pole dancing? Me either!
Yay for you!! Damn, you’ll be back in your prime in no time.
The most I did was cough. I’ve been fighting some kind of something trying to literally kill me. I’ve been armed with tissue and NyQuil for several days now.
For the first time in ages, I can say I’d really rather be running right now than piled up with everything drippy.
I make a mean Nyquil martini
Hope you’re feeling better!
Love the blue shoes, they are snazzy! Congrats on the first week being finished, sometimes getting started is the biggest hurdle. I’ve got my first 6 days finished and I was getting comfy on the couch, but I think I may get up and at least do the minimum right now, thank you
I hope you made it! (I spent the rest of the day on the couch)
This week I ate and sat on my ass. But tomorrow! Tomorrow I will sit on the sidelines and cheer you on…while I stuff my face. Go you!
And how did you choose your blog name? Just wondering
Today I ran five minutes on the treadmill. Well, shuffled five minutes. Maybe closer to three minutes. Took me an hour to find my shoes.
I did ok until the weekend hit. I planned to run outside but it snowed and snowed and snowed. It’s still snowing. Of course they haven’t plowed my street yet. Seriously zapped all motivation. I guess I’ll have to get a treadmill. I hate treadmills. And Alaska. I hate Alaska and all this fracking snow.
But you like me. Glass half full.
Poppy, I love reading your blog! Don’t feel bad about yourself; though that’s not to say, “Don’t push yourself.” I took nearly two months off during Nov/Dec and am feeling it. We’ll get there! My 2012 running goals: 2-3 Half Marathons, followed by either San Francisco or Portland marathons. SF may be too expensive this year but either way, I’m running my third marathon. I ran a total of 15.6 miles this week, mostly hills, and at a pace I would normally scoff at. However, after a slow start in 2010, I know I’ve go the chops to take it to the next level. My running mantra (helped me through Vancouver marathon), “No head games. Just RUN.” Go get ‘em, Poppy!
Signed,
Carli

Carli you were so encouraging during the marathon when I was struggling too – you’re awesome – thank you. I guess I am playing a slight head game w/#Runstreak because it’s forcing me to get out the door when it has been so easy to crawl back under the covers.
So you did San Fran last year? I have all these awesome runs on my bucket list, but I need to well — start running consistently before making plans.
I hope to see you at a group run soon. When is your next half?
and #runstreak is working , it’s getting us both out there and I was pretty sure it was a challenge you could not resist. We can do this and I’m loving it
No, not SF yet. By “this year” I just meant ‘at this time’. My first half this year will be either Race for the Roses or Helvetia.
I emailed ya a question!
I need to get running more & more. I was planning on 8.5 on Saturday, but I had the kids, and they started protesting at about mile marker 5, so I made it to 5.5, and considered myself done.
My issue, right now, is that I need to have my run done before 6 in the morning — and getting on the road at 4:30 isn’t too bad, but it’s really fucking cold at 4:30 in the morning in the middle of the winter, and that’s if the ground isn’t icy (I’m clumsy enough, on my own, without ice to aid my falling down). So, I’m spinning & lifting weights before work Tuesday through Friday. Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, I do the 30 minute body circuit, plus the 12 minute ab circuit at Planet Fitness, then I go out for something long on Saturday or Sunday.
It’s working, mostly.
When I do run, I’m finding that I’m running 9-minute miles once I’m warmed up (assuming that I’m not pushing 60+ pounds of kids & jogging stroller), but if I don’t stretch, thoroughly, after I’m done, I grow unbelievably tight. I hate getting old.
I run balls in. Every time.
Are they dipped in hummus?
Good for you!
As a “previous runner” trying to break back into the scene I totally know how you feel. I’m lucky to get a nice three-miler in and then am still having trouble climbing up and down the stairs. It’s a bit embarrassing to be so far from where I was, but at least I’m making the effort and putting in the time.
It is so hard to get started after a hiatus. I kind of feel like I’m close to “previous runner” status. I am so far from where I have been, but I’m really motivated right now. Hoping it does the trick.
